Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This week as we prepare to offer our thanks and begin our Thanksgiving preparations, I want to offer my sincere thanks to everyone in the MFA community who have made this year such a success so far!  I look to each of you for inspiration and support as I face some new challenges and new opportunities for our school.

First, as most of you are already aware, we have been without a physical education teacher.  We have hired Rhythm and Moves to provide PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning December 2nd.  To learn more about this highly regarded program that has been providing physical education to Catholic schools in the Bay Area since 1984, please visit their website www.rhythmandmoves.com

This exciting program will be taught by two fully credentialed physical education teachers who will implement a CA Standards-Based PE program two days a week.  Rhythm and Moves brings to MFA all its own equipment and will provide MFA students with progress reports so that parents can see how their child is performing in physical fitness.  I think MFA students and parents will be very pleased with Rhythm and Moves and the new direction of the PE program.

Students will be expected to wear PE uniforms on Tuesdays and Wednesdays only.  Thursday will no longer be a PE day so the PE uniform is not required.  We will allow students to wear either the PE uniform or the formal uniform on Thursdays until December 19th.  However, when we return to school on January 5, 2009, we will expect that students will wear formal uniforms on Monday, Thursday and Friday and PE uniforms on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

In addition to the changes in the PE program, we have made some other changes that I believe will better serve students and promote academic achievement at MFA.  Beginning today, the Extended Day Program has been reorganized and renamed ASAP-After School Academic Program.  Mr. Steele is the new coordinator and the new focus is to support student learning from 3-6PM daily.  Attached you will find two letters detailing the changes and the new direction we are taking to ensure that the after school program supports the academic goals of the school.

I invite all MFA parents to visit the reorganized program and see for yourself how it will be more conducive to tutoring, studying, reading and learning.

Lastly, I look forward to seeing you and your family tomorrow night at Chevy’s Restaurant on Van Ness.  Be sure to bring the flyer in this week’s Wednesday folder to learn how you can have a great meal AND support or school.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, -please call me 346-9500 or email me nmcauliffe@meganfurthacademy.org

Have a Blessed Week

Dear MFA Parents and Caregivers,

It is with great enthusiasm that I write to you about the return of a well-respected MFA teacher, Mr. Marcus Steele.  For those parents who do not know Mr. Steele, he taught math in science in grades 5 and 6 last year.  Mr. Steele is a credentialed teacher who holds a Master’s Degree from the University of San Francisco.   Marcus is a competent teacher and role model for our children.

I am very pleased to announce that Marcus Steele will be returning to MFA as of November 12, 2008.  His new role will have him working with all students both during the school day and after school.  Marcus will be teaching a daily computer/technology class to all K-8 students.  During the after school program, his primary role will be to coordinate the academic component of the program providing homework support and tutoring to all registered after school program students.

Mr. Steele will be communicating directly with after school program parents to ensure that your child’s academic needs will be met during after school hours.  His is looking forward to being the “academic” liaison between parents and classroom teachers during the after school hours.  After school program parents should expect to hear from him next week!

Marcus will be on the job as of next Wednesday and his classes will begin on Monday, November 17th.  Please join me in welcoming him back “home” to MFA!

Sincerely,

Nicole McAuliffe
